Find Individual and Family Plans From Top Providers

Everyone deserves health insurance that

covers ALL the essential benefits.

This includes health, hospitals, preferred doctors, dental, vision, and prescriptions. The problem is that it feels like a dream. How often are you telling yourself, “I should see a doctor for this”?

But:

  • You can’t find plans within your network that don’t have a high co-pay…

  • You're worried if the health plans will cover everything vital...

  • You stress about whether the doctors will give real care…

  • You can’t pay the high monthly premium...

  • And you can’t figure out how the system works.

It is a nightmare.

The worst part is trying to get covered outside the annual Open Enrollment Period (OEP). Not everyone can remember or can sign up for healthcare during that time.

This is where the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) can help you.

With a SEP you can get health insurance through the Marketplace, even if you missed Open Enrollment. You qualify for this period through life events.

What Are Qualifying Life Events (QLE)?

Qualifying Life Events are big life changes that allow you to get or change health insurance outside the usual sign-up time.

Here are the most common QLEs that trigger a Special Enrollment Period:

New Birth or Adoption

If you've had, adopted, or fostered a child in the last 60 days, your family qualifies for a special enrollment. This includes if your child was placed for adoption or foster care.

Change in Income or Employment Status

If your income changes or you lose your job (health insurance included), you can sign up for new health coverage during a special enrollment period.

Moving or Changing Address

Answers To Your Special Enrollment Period Questions

Is there a penalty for not having health insurance?

Since 2019, there has been no federal tax penalty for not having healthcare coverage. The federal tax penalty ended, but that doesn’t rule out the risk of something unexpected happening. If you don’t have health insurance, not having it could cost thousands of dollars and even cause you to go bankrupt.

How long is the special enrollment period?

You have a period of 60 before or after a qualifying life event to get new health insurance. For employer-based health plans, this period is shortened to 30 days.

How often do open enrollment periods usually occur?

The annual Open Enrollment period is from Nov. 1 to Jan. 15 for most states. Employer-sponsored health plans can vary when they annually get new coverage.

Does pregnancy count towards special enrollment periods?

Pregnancy does not count as a qualifying life event. The birth of the child is what triggers the Special Enrollment Period. Pregnant parents may be eligible for Medicaid coverage depending on their income. Medicaid enrollment happens year-round.

What life changes qualify you for the Special Enrollment period?

If you experience a qualifying life event, you are eligible for the Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This means that you can enroll in or change your health insurance outside of the Open Enrollment. Qualifying life events include things like getting married, having a baby, or losing other health coverage.
